Specific learning outcomesof the Programme

The degree programme in “Intercultural and Linguistic Mediation” aims to provide an appropriate level of knowledge of the methods, cultural andscientific content and skills pertaining to the study of foreign languages,language mediation, liaison interpreting and translation, in line with Italianand EU legislation.

More specifically, graduates in Intercultural and Linguistic Mediationwill acquire the following competencies and skills:

- Inter-linguistic and intercultural communication skills in Italian andat least three foreign languages;

- Practical translation skills and oral/written language mediationskills;

- Knowledge of the relevant culture, literature, economics, law,sociology and history;

- The ability to use communication and information management tools;

- The ability to operate autonomously and to blend quickly and effectivelyinto their future professional environments.

The main components of the curriculum include:

1) Practice inItalian and 3 foreign languages (language 1 is the one the student took theadmission test in; languages 2 and 3 are chosen by the student upon registration),designed to develop:

- Language andcommunication skills and the ability to use them both orally and in writtenform;

- Cultural andintercultural knowledge and understanding applied to the comprehension andproduction of oral discourse and written texts;

- The theory andmethodology needed to channel and develop the knowledge, competencies andskills acquired during the degree, in particular the ability to learn andindependence of judgment.

2) Practicein Italian and two foreign languages (languages 1 and 2) designed to develop:

- Advanced ICT skills and a high level of competencein intercultural and inter-linguistic mediation;

- The application of this expertise to the techniquesof translation and liaison interpreting.

3) Training in Italian and two foreign languagesdesigned to develop skills and knowledge of a historical/cultural,economic/legal, literary, intercultural and socio-anthropological nature; allof which form an indispensable interdisciplinary background for the studentsand also contribute to the acquisition of a learning method and the developmentof independence of judgment.

4) Training activities:

- As chosen by students to enrich and complete theirinterdisciplinary training via an individual curriculum;

- A vocational internshipwith an Italian or foreign company, institution or university, designed toapply and supplement the skills and competencies acquired during the degreeprogramme by applying them in a genuine professional context.

Extra-curricular activities

Each year, lectures,seminars and workshops are given by lecturers, scholars, professionals andstakeholders coming from Italy and abroad. All these initiatives are hosted inForlì by the School of Languages and Literatures, Translation and Interpreting(www.scuolalingue.unibo.it) and by the Department forInterpreting and Translation - DIT ( www.dit.unibo.it ).

Since 1992, every yearstudents and lecturers stage an end-of-year theatre performance in the variouslanguages taught: Arabic, Bulgarian, Chinese, English, French, German, Italian,Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, Slovak and Spanish. While not compulsory, thisdrama activity has gained importance over the years for its potential infostering students' linguistic and communication skills and cultural awareness.

International mobility

A Foreign StudentOffice is available to inform, coordinate and manage exchange opportunitieswith foreign institutions in the framework of the Erasmus Plus, Overseas, as well as other international mobility agreements.

The Erasmus PlusProgramme provides opportunities to study abroad at many European universitiesfor periods between 3 and 12 months.

Final examination

Execution of the final test

The purpose of the final test is to assess whether all skills and competences requested for language mediators have been duly acquired with this study path.The final test contemplates che preparation of a written piece of work under the guidance of a supervisor and approved by the Graduation Committee. The topic chosen for this piece of work must be related to the teaching content of the Degree Course or to other personal interests of the student. The graduation ceremony is held in public at a later stage and degrees will be conferred individually with the indication of the final mark assigned by the Graduation Committee.

This degree gives access to second level degree courses (specialized/magistrale degree) and to second level Master courses.

A Moodle platform is used internally for exchanging texts, teaching and study materials and exercises as well as for communication between students and lecturers, in e-learning mode.

In addition, an agreement exists with SDL-Trados to offer students opportunities to learn to use this popular CAT tool and become certified users. Thanks to this collaboration, students have the opportunity to become familiar with technological advancements and professional best practices in the fields of translation, terminology management and quality assurance, and to become part of the community of professional translators.
